FAQ

Q: Are you open all year round?

A: Yes, but we do close for routine maintenance periodically throughout the year.

Q: Can I bring a cooler or my own food & beverage to the pool?

A: NO outside food or drink, coolers or 3rd party food delivery will be allowed inside the pool area. Refillable water bottles are permitted. Food and beverages are available for purchase at the poolside Grill - view hours of operation for the Grill & Snack Bar.

Q: Can I bring floats or lifejackets to the pool?

A: Floats are allowed but not in the Therapy Pool or the deep end of the Big Pool.  Floats in the main pool must be appropriate in size to not impair the lifeguard's ability to see the bottom of what is under the float.

Lifejackets are allowed in the Therapy Pool but not the deep end of the Big Pool.

Q: If we leave the pool during the day, can we return later?

A: Yes - Stamp your hand upon exiting. Re-entering the pool is free for your convenience.

Q: Can I bring a tent to the pool?

A: For the safety of our guests, personal umbrellas, tents or shade structures are not permitted inside the facility.

Q: Are there locker rooms available?

A: Yes. We provide free lockers, private dressing rooms, and showers along with family changing rooms and ADA-accessible rooms.

Q: How big are the pools?

A: Our main pool, the “big” pool, is 405 feet long and 100 feet wide at the widest point. It contains 1,071,000 gallons of water, and is kept at about 90° F / 32° C, and features a diving area and exercise lap lanes. Our therapy pool is 100 feet long and contains 91,000 gallons of water. It is kept at a temperature of about 104° F / 40° C.

Q: What minerals are present in the water?

A: There are over 15 different minerals found in the chemical analysis, but the four most abundant minerals in the pool are Sodium Chloride, Potassium Sulfate, Calcium Sulfate, and Calcium Bicarbonate.

Q: Where does the hot water come from?

A: The Yampah spring is located at the eastern end of our property. It has a daily flow of 3,500,000 gallons of water, at approximately 122° F/ 51° C. The source for the Yampah Spring is south of the Colorado River in the Lookout Mountain and Grand Hogback areas. The water percolates through fractures in the bedrock formation into the Leadville aquifer. As this occurs, the water is heated by the geothermal gradient in the area.

Q: What is that egg-like smell?

A: Sulfate, which is a compound of Sulfur. Beneath the surface, as the water heats up due to increasing pressure and proximity to the earth’s core, it dissolves minerals including sulfur found in the surrounding soil and rocks. The sulfur binds with oxygen to form the compound sulfate. Sulfur compounds are naturally occurring in hot springs and the source of the characteristic eggy odor. According to BANA, The Balneology Association of North America, “Hydrating with Sulfur rich mineral waters has been used medicinally since ancient times.  It’s also known as “nature’s beauty mineral” because your body needs it to manufacture collagen which helps with skin elasticity and keeps us young looking. Sulfur is contained in every cell in the body. Approximately 0.25 percent of your total body weight is sulfur. It is most concentrated in keratin which gives you strong hair, nails and skin. Sulfur eases irritated skin conditions, relieves pain and helps protect the body and eliminate toxins.” Once you’ve enjoyed a soak in our sulfur-rich waters we think you’ll learn to love smell as we have, or maybe not, but we’re pretty sure you’ll feel better.

Q: Is there chlorine in the pools?

A: Yes. While we utilize a million-dollar, state-of-the-art ozone purification system, we are still required by State Health Department regulations to maintain chlorine residuals in our pools. Our water is monitored 24 hours a day to ensure the utmost purity for our guests.

Q: How often is the pool cleaned?

A: Our pool is filtered and purified 24 hours a day and both pools receive a complete changeover every six hours.

Q: Do you use any fresh water in the pools?

A: Yes. Because our water is so hot as it rises from underground (122° F / 51° C), we must add fresh water for cooling purposes.
