Winter Activities in Colorado for Non-Skiers

Colorado has a stellar reputation for its world-class skiing and snowboarding, but there is so much more to do from November to April than hitting the slopes. If the thought of schussing down fresh powder on a bluebird-sky day gives you the shivers, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort has plenty of ideas for winter activities in Colorado for non-skiers.

Here is a sampling of things to do for a weekend or weeklong trip to the mountain town of Glenwood Springs, gateway to the Roaring Fork Valley dfor non skiers.

Hot Springs Soaking

Glenwood Springs has been known as a blissful hot springs getaway since Glenwood Hot Springs Pool opened in 1888. However, Ute Native Americans discovered the value of soaking in the mineral-rich hot springs that flow along the banks of the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon long before.

Today, the tradition continues and the historic sandstone bathhouse at the pool provides a glimpse of the rich history and provides a comfortable place to change in newly renovated locker rooms and work out in the modern Athletic Club. Enjoy the world-renowned attraction all day or come and go at the pool as much as you please from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. when purchasing a day pass or season pass—no reservations are needed. Rent a cozy enclosed cabana with a fire pit for the ultimate winter day.

Snowshoeing and Nordic Skiing

Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs is more than a great place for skiing and snowboarding. The resort has about 29 kilometers of groomed cross-country and snowshoe trails that wind their way through a beautiful high valley, Babbish Gulch, and are flanked by Sunlight Mountain and the 10,300-foot Williams Peak. Cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals are available on the mountain or at Sunlight Ski & Bike Shop in town, and there is no charge for trail use.

For those who prefer breaking their own trail, a wide range of backcountry options around Glenwood Springs are available. Make sure to check avalanche conditions before going out to explore.

Snowmobiling Tours

Wait, there’s more at Sunlight! If your family or group is a mix of people who like to ski and snowboard and those who don’t, it’s an ideal setup. A variety of snowmobiling tours also are offered by the resort. Adventure, family and overnight excursions to Electric Mountain Lodge in Paonia are available with professional guides who know the machines and terrain.

The one-hour family tour starts at Sunlight Mountain Inn and traverses into the White River National Forest through tall pines and aspen groves. Riders of all abilities are sure to enjoy this 16-mile, easygoing journey. Adventure rides cover 30 miles, last 2.5 hours and treat participants to magnificent 360-degree views of Mt. Sopris, the Sawatch Range, and Elk and Flattops mountains and time in Baylor Park. For all tours, drivers must be 16 years or older, and riders must be at least 10 years of age.

Fat Biking

You may be familiar with mountain biking and the fabulous feeling of soaring across dirt trails, around curves and over rocks and roots. But how about fat biking? It’s the winter version of mountain biking with sturdy bike frames and uber-fat tires that glide across the snow, with some effort of course! Give it a try by renting a fat bike at Sunlight Ski & Bike Shop in town and asking staff about where it is best to go for current conditions.

Fly-Fishing

Fishing in the mountains isn’t limited to summer and fall. Some enthusiasts claim that winter is when there is the least amount of pressure on hatcheries and one of the best times to cast away for trout. Check in with local outfitters to book a guide, buy gear, and land tips about where it’s best to go during snowy months. If you happen to get a little wet, head straight to the hot springs to warm up!

Shopping & Dining

While staying at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, don’t forget to stop by the pool lobby’s Shop for a great selection of swimwear, clothing for mountain getaways and much more. Take the short stroll over the pedestrian bridge to all sorts of great locally owned stores and restaurants, ranging from barbecue and bistros to coffee houses, underground Italian and casual places to grab a burger.

Beverage Hopping

Colorado is known as a craft beer mecca, and Glenwood Springs has its fair share of local suds. Head to Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company, Casey Brewing & Blending, and Ball Brewing & Taproom to sample all sorts of delicious creations. Check the schedule for Casey Brewing Experiences at the Barrel Cellar with owner and blender Troy Casey.

If you prefer spirits, go to Stoneyard Distillery Tasting Room. All the company’s spirits, liqueurs and bitters are made from beet sugar grown in Colorado. Wine lovers will enjoy the extensive wine list and tasty menu at Riveria Supper Club and Scratch Kitchen.

Day Tripping

With a convenient location at the crossroads of Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 82, Glenwood Springs and Glenwood Hot Springs Resort are ideal base camps for all sorts of memorable day excursions. Head south on Highway 82 and stroll the charming downtowns in Basalt and Carbondale on the way to Snowmass Village and Aspen, where there are all sorts of ways to spend time. Or head east on Interstate 70 from Glenwood Springs to visit two other towns known for glitz and glamour: Beaver Creek and Vail. Even if you don’t ski, it’s fun to visit the ski area bases to shop, dine, ice skate and more.

Before you go, start your day with a hearty, made-to-order breakfast and a hot springs soak, both included in every stay at Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge.

Get out and enjoy these winter activities in Colorado for non-skiers. It’s a winter wonderland where you can be as chill or adventurous as desired.
