A Viking Funeral

Can you believe it? I have been coming to the Glenwood Hot Springs for 66 years! I first came with my parents and grandparents when I was four years old. We vacationed there every summer, and I remember when the pool was surrounded by sand with slides and a huge fountain in the middle.

It was a long 5 hour trip over Loveland Pass and Vail Pass. My parents were Holocaust Survivors and often traveled with friends, who were also refugees. They came to Glenwood Springs because it reminded them of places in Austria and Germany. I have carried on the tradition and have brought my family every year since, sometimes in November for Thanksgiving. It was only fitting therefore, that in 2019, BP (before the Pandemic) we brought my son's family and our 2 grandchildren as well as my daughter and son-in-law. We all stayed in the lodge in adjacent rooms and had a wonderful time.

Little did we know however, that our 12yr old granddaughter had brought her dying guinea pig with her. The little thing died on the way to Glenwood which caused a lot of upset. What to do? Why a funeral of course. My son disappeared and came back with armloads of sticks and begin to build a small raft using twine. So, not just any funeral but a Viking Funeral was to take place. We all trudged down to the Two Rivers Park. We put the little thing on the raft and sent it down the river on its journey to Valhalla. After a few tears and comforting, a swim in the glorious hot water was in order. There was lots of fun to be had diving, playing ball and soaking. Later that evening we had a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner at the Rivers Restaurant which sadly is no longer there. We can't wait to come this year once again because it is by far our favorite place in Colorado.
